School Council

Here at St John Fisher our student council is currently made up of representatives of Year 5 and 6 pupils. The pupils applied for the positions in the Autumn Term and were voted into power by their peers.

Each class  in our school has its own representative from Reception to year 6. The students meet at least once a month with Mr Kenny to discuss ways to help the school and organise different pupil events.

After the meetings, pupils go to each class to pass on what was discussed in the meeting, and the classes can put questions and ideas forward to their representatives to bring to further sessions.

So far this year, the School Council has focused on pupil voice and spent a number of meetings discussing how to improve school life for children and adults. They have worked on improving our carbon footprint and ensured our playground environment has both general waste and recycling bins for everyone to use.

 Spring Term Actions

  • During Aspirations Week, our school council met with a local councillor to discuss how he started his career, and what his role entails. He was incredibly impressed by the questions he received by our pupils.
  • After much discussion, our school council started a new school newspaper, which will be released at the end of each half term.
  • During our meetings, the school council have agreed that we must bring back the celebratory biscuit and tea for those who are the Golden Certificate winners each week. This will restart in the summer.

Pupil Voice 2025

During the spring term, Mr Kenny met with representatives from Key Stage 1, the student council, reading champions and the mini-vinnies to discuss our school community. Children spoke confidently about their school day, including their learning, their playtimes, our school rules and more. Below are some findings from the discussions and the actions  taken from the meeting.

Findings:

100% of the children liked the topics taught across the school and would like to learn even more about modern history.

100% of the children felt they had lots of friends that they enjoy spending time with.

100%  of the children agreed they are taught lots of ways to be safe in and out of school, including online safety.

72% enjoyed home learning and think it is the right amount.

100% of children knew who to go to speak to if they felt worried about something.

The were asked to describe our school to a visitor. Children shared:

"St John Fisher is a good school. It is loving, caring and friendly"

"Memories are made here and we have great trips"

"Welcoming"

"Lots of people who are kind"

"You will be sae here, because you are with us, and when mistakes happen, we always forgive here"

Actions:

- School to bring back the Golden table during lunchtime.

- Review and further discuss home learning and what children like doing at home to support learning.

- Children want to get involved in what they learn, so in the summer term they can meet Mr Kenny to share reviews of their year.

-More to be done with the drop off points around school to help all feel safe.
